As a great friend of R.M. Barr Smith, James E. F. Mann was such a frequent guest of Mount William Station that the room was coined Uncle Jim’s Room. A bachelor and bold character, Uncle Jim went to Cambridge and fought in World War II with R.M. Barr Smith; thus, cementing their friendship for a lifetime.

As one of R.M. Barr Smith’s closest mates, Uncle Jim was an unique character and welcome guest of the Homestead. A top sportsman, he scored 114 against Sussex for the Blues and was reportedly good enough to play cricket for Australia.

Instead, he went to Crete to serve in the war where he went nine days with just two meals while hiding from German soldiers in a bush with a friend. While Uncle Jim managed to escape, his friend was sadly captured.

While Uncle Jim was known to be a bachelor, he did love one woman. Unfortunately, he felt that he didn’t have enough to offer her so he never married her. In the end, she married his best friend and he was the best man at their wedding.
